All Organic Food Sources on Maui

Aloha! Welcome to the most thorough guide to organic food sources in Maui that is currently available. In this article, we outline all of the organic food sources on Maui, from 100% organic to organic as much as possible, but always striving to be locally-sourced at the very least. The compilation of restaurants, farms and grocery stores are listed alphabetically by region for easy navigation. If you’re looking for the most comprehensive guide to organic eating in Maui, you’ve come to the right place!

Top Maui All Organics Food Sources

When it comes to quality food sources, Maui has many. However, USDA certified organic food sources are harder to come by on the island. Much of the Maui-grown produce is grown on small farms. Many of these local farmers are farming “organically,” but they are not yet certified USDA organic due to a lengthy and costly certification process.

The USDA organic label is not as prominent on Maui as it is on the mainland. Instead, some common terms for organic farming are “biodynamic” and “certified naturally grown.” These terms indicate to consumers that the product was grown without synthetic chemicals from some fertilizers and pesticides and also without genetic modification or antibiotics.

Alchemy Maui is an excellent bistro. Located in Lahaina on Maui’s West Side, this is a perfect spot for a healthy, organic lunch on Maui. Alchemy Maui is offering up food and drinks made with locally sourced, organic and non-GMO ingredients, with many delicious vegan and vegetarian offerings on the menu.

Alchemy Maui is known for their tasty, organic, family-crafted kombucha that is made with Maui ingredients. Guests will find several premium flavors on tap at Alchemy Maui. No need to worry, the staff here is very helpful with suggestions, and you can taste various kombucha flavors before deciding.

Tucked away in the industrial part of Lahaina, this relaxing hideaway offers an amazing lunchtime menu. Our favorite is their mouthwatering paninis. They’re made with Maui artisan sourdough that is baked in-house daily (Monday through Friday). Try the house-cured pastrami panini that is slowly brined for 45 days; thin sliced, tender and piled high. This sandwich is a meat lover’s dream, and is hands down the best pastrami sandwich on Maui. The menu also features many farm-to-table items. Everything at Alchemy is delicious, and made with fresh ingredients from Maui’s local farms. Fork & Salad

Fork & Salad is the concept of chef-owners Cody Christopher, Jaron Blosser and Travis Morrin. Their vision was to create a way to make farm-to-table food more readily available to the masses. Maui currently has two locations; one in Kihei on Maui’s South Shore, and the other in the Pu’unene Shopping Center in Kahului (across from Target).

Fork and Salad is the perfect spot to pick up some quick healthy organic foods on Maui. The best part is, not only is the farm-to-table cuisine convenient and affordable, it’s delicious! Patrons can order from their list of Signature Salads that include old-time favorites like Caesar, Greek and Cobb salads. Or, you can build your own salad in a three-step process. First, you choose your base, which is from a list of amazing greens. Step 2, you choose 5 ingredients from a list of veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds, plus one of their homemade dressings. Step 3 is optional, and this is when you can add meat from a list of proteins that include fresh local fish. Last, but not least, consider adding some finishing extras like flaxseed and nutritional yeast. They also have a selection of tasty soups and sandwiches that are incredibly fresh and delicious*

At Fork & Salad, guests will also find some of our favorite made on Maui products including locally made kombucha on tap, Pono Pies (an amazing vegan and gluten-free cheesecake that is made from locally sourced ulu aka breadfruit). Next time you want to pick up a quick and delicious farm-to-table meal, stop by Fork & Salad. The hardest part will be deciding which delicious salad or sandwich to try first!

Maui Bees

Maui Bees is a family business that produces pure and artisanal Maui honey on the slopes of Mt. Haleakala. Their honey is naturally harvested, and 100% cold-processed. Their wild and raw honey is delicious, and we love that they perform sustainable business practices when making their products.

Maui Bees has two seasonal honey harvests during the year: Summer and Winter.

During the Summer months, bees collect nectar from the Wilelaiki trees that grow on the Leeward side of Mt. Haleakala. Summer honey has a singular appearance and flavor– lightly colored with a simple floral note. During the winter, the bees collect nectar from Mt. Haleakala’s Eucalyptus, Silky Oak, Avocado, and Ohia Lehua trees. The Winter honey is darker in color, and the flavor is more complex with caramel and butterscotch notes.

Besides honey, Maui Bees ethically manufactures a wide variety of products. Items include organic baked goods, packaged goods, sauces, jams, teas, coffee, and more.

Maui Bees products can be purchased through their website and at a variety of organic grocery stores in Hawaii. If you’re on Maui, you can find Maui Bees products at Mana Foods in Paia. For visitors that would like to visit the Maui Bees farm facility, they offer weekly beekeeper workshops and agricultural farm tours.

The Wednesday Market

Formerly the Makawao Farmer’s Market, the newly titled Wednesday Market is the only market in Maui with 100% organic, non-GMO products. They recently moved from Makawao to Kula but still operate every Wednesday from 9-1. They continue to accept foodstamps.

The Wednesday Market has a special, intimate charm to it. It’s very small, and you’re not likely to find everything you need there. What you will find are local farmers eager to talk to you about their farming methods and passionate about what they grow.

It’s also a great place to find hand-made jewelry and organic starter plants.

The bottom line with eating organic in Maui is that you can easily eat the highest quality, sustainably farmed products using organic farming methods, but most of what you eat is not USDA organic. There are a lot of stores and restaurants focusing on local over certified organic. The goal is to help these tiny farms succeed, even without the costly USDA certified organic label. If in doubt, ask! Most places will be happy to explain where their produce came from, especially since most of it traveled very few miles.
