Best places to eat sushi on Maui
Our list embraces sushi at every price point from the small neighborhood favorites, ‘Aipono Award winners and high-end establishments, with each experience worth the trip.
Koiso Sushi Bar
This is one of Maui’s most popular sushi bars, reaching near-legendary status. With only seating enough for 15, it is actually impossible to get in without a reservation. During the busy season, one may need to make a reservation for up to two weeks in advance. The sushi is simply divine, meaning this is not the place for complicated or unique rolls, but for good old fashioned traditional Japanese-style nigari, sashimi, and the simpler rolls. Koiso is our #1 spot for sushi on Maui.
Nuka
Hiro Takanashi, Nuka’s master sushi chef has been making sushi for over 35 years. We know this because we have followed him all of the Island of Maui. Finally, Hiro has settled in at home, at Maui’s North Shore’s hot spot, Nuka. Together with restaurant creators and owners, Yuri, DeWitt and Moon, they take this Izakaya style Japanese sushi restaurant to new levels. Featuring locally sourced seasonal ingredients, creatively unique dishes, and amazingly fresh fish. Beautifully plastered walls, slatted wood ceilings with polished aluminum lighting and chairs lend to the warm, modern Zen feeling of the restaurant.
Morimoto Maui
Located beachfront in the spectacular Andaz Maui Resort, Morimoto offers an amazing dining experience featuring fresh, delicious sushi and so much more. Sip on one of their unique cocktail while looking over the extensive menu with a gorgeous view of Maui’s spectacular sunsets as your back drop. With 180-degree ocean views, this is the perfect spot for a romantic sushi extravaganza. The menu utilized fresh locally sourced ingredients while seamlessly integrating Japanese ingredients.
Sansei Seafood
Restaurant & Sushi Bar
Offering two locations on Maui, including South Kihei and Kapalua, Sansei is a long-running local favorite for sushi on Maui. They’re also the winner of the Gold ‘Aipono Award for “Best Sushi.”
Friends and families flock here. More often than not there is line out the door. On certain days of the week, they offer early bird specials with discounts on sushi until 6:00 pm. Days vary, so call ahead for more information and be aware that early bird times can be very busy with the line starting to form an hour before opening.
Restaurant & Sushi Bar
Miso Phat
Family owned and operated, Miso Phat has two locations. Both are tucked away in shopping complexes, one in Kahana and one in Kihei. Miso Phat Sushi Bar’s may seem like an unassuming eatery at first glance, however they just won the Silver Maui ‘Aipono Award for “Best Sushi” 2018.
Lahaina Sushi Ko
In the heart of Lahaina Town, you’ll find that Lahaina Sushi Ko is serving up some incredibly fresh sushi made with locally sourced quality ingredients. Located off Front Street, you will love this location’s open-air courtyard. Tucked away in the midst of fine art galleries, you will enjoy eating tasty sushi while being surrounded by beautiful pieces of art. Lahaina Sushi Ko offers masterfully prepared food that cultivates Hawaii’s fresh flare, blended with traditional Japanese cuisine.
M Sushi
M Sushi is locally owned and operated by a mother and son duo. Chef Martin (sushi chef and co-owner) is known for providing one of the hottest “cold kitchens” on Maui. His mother is the face of the front of the house. This Maui sushi spot is hands down one of the best on Maui. Plus, it’s in Wailuku, a hip and laid back local town that’s nuzzled alongside the leeward side of the lush West Maui Mountains.
Sushi Paradise
Although this is a no-frills kind of sushi, we don’t go here for ambiance. We go here for the freshness of the fish. Sushi Paradise is one of our favorite sushi spots on Maui’s South Side. Sushi Paradise is a casual and straightforward sushi restaurant that you will find tucked away next to the Longs in Kihei. There are several tables as well as a sushi bar, however it gets hopping here and the hostess may turn you away when the seats are full and the wait is too long to accommodate.
1054 Togoshi
Although this restaurant is small and limited to a two man/woman show, husband and wife team (He is the sushi chef and she is the server), the food here is spot on. We love the artistic presentation coupled with the amazingly fresh and delicate cuts of fish. Locals call 1054 Togoshi a hidden gem in Kihei.
Kojima’s Sushi & Japanese Cuisine
Voted by MauiTime Weekly readers as Best of Maui 2018’s ‘Best Kept Secret on Maui,” Kojima’s Sushi & Japanese Cuisine is tucked away in an inconspicuous shopping center on the Pukalani side of Makawao Avenue. Owner-Chef Kojima is a culinary master who began his career at the age of fourteen working in his parent’s restaurant in Tokyo. He opened his first restaurant after moving to Chicago in 1979. Chef Kojima is highly regarded for his traditional sushi and authentic Japanese cuisine.
